Yosemite Region 2017 Concours
report by Don Chaisson.
Our Concours was the first Zone 7 Concours for the year and was held at the Fields Winery, Sunday May 21. The day opened early for the organizers, showing up at the Winery at about 7:00 AM. Coffee and (way too many) donuts fueled the set up. The concours entrants started showing up at about 7:30, some coming from as far away as Monterey and from Redwood Region! These guys are serious!
We staged the cars for judging on the “lawn” — apparently, showing on a “lawn” is a status location in and by itself, with enough space to allow preparation and open-door judging.
We also had a nice location for non-judged, “show” cars –, all lined up in front of the vineyard.
All in all, a pretty nice assortment of fine Porsche automobiles. But, this was a CONCOURS!
John D’Angelo, Concours chair for Zone 7 was the “OIC” (official in charge!!) and after giving the entrants the scheduled start time, and allowing time to clean the cars after their drive to Lodi, he held the pre-judging meeting.
Judge assignments were made, timer assignments made and the rules of the day were announced.
Then, the judging began.
Those not familiar with Concours (like “me”) found it interesting how the system went. A judge did a “walk around” for exterior, and then depending on the particular class, judges for various internal areas began their inspection. The timer announced how much time they had to find “any” dirt, I didn’t see any white gloves, but.. they were thorough, ….
but they did seem to be having a good time!
General attendees also had a great time, looking over the remarkably clean and historically interesting cars.
Here is our own Yosemite Region’s “track rat”, Norm Swanberg enjoying a close look at Larry Moeller’s 914-6 GT. This 914-6 GT is NOT a replica, but one of the either 14 or 28 factory GT’s imported to the US. Though Larry entered it in the concours, it isn’t a “garage queen” by any stretch — Larry has raced it over the years.
Also present, was the Yosemite Region’s El Portal editor, Braken Helms. He has started marketing unique “auto themed” tee shirts and hats. You can catch his inventory selection at: https://www.circuitsixfour.com
After the judging was complete, everyone queued up for a tasty lunch of BBQ and general discussion.
Then, the awards for “best” were presented. To say that pretty much everyone was happy is an understatement. There were 10 entrants in 9 categories.. so, everyone got a trophy.
That included Yosemite Region’s only entrant: Kathryn Enos. Kathryn and her father, Jack Wilson displayed their beautiful Silver 1959 356.
Sure seems that she enjoyed her “award” !!
