Our first event for 2019, the “Annual Dinner (and Business Meeting)” returned to the Redwood Cafe, in Modesto, Sunday Feb 10th. The event, attended by over 40 Yosemite members, was a great combination of social gathering, enjoyable meal, announcing our 2019 event Calendar and recognition of Norm and Virgina Swanberg’s decades of service to the Yosemite Region — sort of a “lifetime achievement” award!
The evening kicked off with a “social hour” with appetizers (provided by the club) and no host wine sampling of (up-scale) Gallo wines, arranged by Brian Sturkie. The dinner offered a selection of salads, then one of four entries and a couple of deserts. The portions were generous and taste delicious.
As noted above, one of the highlights of the night was to award Norm and Virgina Swanberg a award for their decades long service to the Yosemite Region! The Swanberg’s joined the region in 1988…yes, that’s over 30 years with the region!! Norm has held just about every job with the board, up to and including region president and just completed serving as region “historian” — his articles on Porsche car history appeared in our Newsletter, El Portal. His love was driving his 944’s “at speed”, with his 944 Turbo being his track day car until it started to cost too much to keep up. So Norm, ever the inventive fellow, bought a Miata and modified it for track duty. Last year he put over 1000 miles on his Miata “on the track” and plans another 8 track days for 2019. Virginia wasn’t just a social member, she was an ACTIVE participant of the Yosemite region, also holding number of board positions, the most recent being “member-at-large” and custodian of our Yosemite “Goodie” store.
The business portion of the meeting was the board’s presentation of the 2019 Calendar of Events. President Pierce introduced the board and set up the calendar for 2019. Brian Sturkie started by presenting the Travis AFB
Thunderbird Drive. Chuck talked about the Hearst Castle Drive, our first “two night” tour, ever! And then outlined the Cooking Class and Underground Garden tour. Don Chaisson described the R-U-Hot, two day, one night tour to Monterey and plans for attending the 2019 WERKS Reunion and Indy Car races in Sept. George presented our “annual” Yosemite Drive, this year an overnight drive/tour to Big Trees Lodge. Chuck finished the calendar discussion with plans for our region’s “60th Birthday” party and “Christmas Dinner and Charity Event”.
This was the first year, in memory, where the region has its full year of events calendared at the beginning of the year. Hats off to the board for pulling this together.
The dinner was a grand affair, but mostly because of the members that came to celebrate their passion for our cars and friendship with members.
